Soup's Here! – Die "Suppe" Ist Da!

WELL, I was expecting a shipment of copper beads from BaliBeads, so when a padded envelope tumbled out of my mailbox upon opening it after work today I first thought it was that, super fast delivery as I only ordered the day before yesterday.

But~!

It was from SueBeads, from my Bead Soup Blog Party partner Susan Kennedy, making it all the way from the USA in record time.

How ever I mustered the discipline to get a shower and a change of clothes first before opening it, I do not know. It probably gives you a pretty good idea just how sweaty and worn out I am, returning from my job.

So.

I'm sure you want to know too.

Also.

ISN'T it gorgeous?!

But it's also very, very purple. Which used to be one of my favorite colors, once. Now I have more of an aversion to it. Hrm. Time to get over it, methinks. And that gorgeous focal is offering for quite a few colors to mix in ...

BSBP Introducing My Partner – BSBP Darf Ich Meine Partnerin Vorstellen

THE 6th BSBP is in full swing, sign ups have been closed partners have been assigned, the bead soups should all have been sent out. I know mine is not going to arrive for a while yet, as my partner Susan lives in the US, plus she was on vacation during the time the beads were supposed to be sent out and was kind enough to let me know mine would be a little late as she wanted to make some beads just for me and not rush things.

Make some beads?

But why of course, Susan creates the most gorgeous lampwork and enamelled beads ever, just take a look at her Etsy shop, SueBeads. Can I please have them all? Seriously, I feel I have hit the proverbial jackpot here, I only hope I'll be able to do her beautiful creations justice.

I doubt she's going to have any trouble tackling what I sent her – if you take a look at her blog Sue Beads, you'll notice she apparently does beading challenges for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and she is doing marvelous at it.

Bead Table Wednesday – Mittwochsperlen

ACTUALLY I'm cheating. This pic was taken Monday evening, and shows the aftermath on my desk after I finished my piece for Amy's Summer Lovin' Kit Challenge. I can't show you the finished piece yet, as the reveal date for the blog hop is still ways off, on August 1st. As you can see there are still plenty of beads left over from the kit, so I'll likely create a few more pieces for it. But, for now I can't see another wrapped loop or I'll run screaming.

BSBP: It Is That Time Again – BSBP: Es Ist Wieder An Der Zeit

IT IS that time again – the 6th Bead Soup Blog Party is in full swing. Sign ups are closed, participants have been assigned their respective partners, and already the blogs of many beaders involved sport pictures taken of the gorgeous bead soups sent and received. Mine will take a little longer to arrive, as my partner lives overseas in the US, whereas I am stuck in the Old World – Germany, to be precise.

But, for those not in the know, lets take a deep breath and a step back. What is this "Bead Soup Blog Party", you may wonder:

Well, it is quite simple to explain, really. It is an event organized by the lovely Lori Anderson, now for the 6th time. To participate, you need to have a blog – Blogger, WordPress, it doesn't matter which one you're using – and a penchant for creating jewelry with beads. You sign up, are assigned a partner, and each of you sends a "bead soup" to your respective partner.
By rules of the BSBP the bead soup must contain a focal, a clasp (and not any old lobster clasp, it ought to be a pretty one), and a nice selection of beads. They type you'd gift to a good friend, please, not some rubbish you just want to get rid of ...
Your partner is then required to create a piece of jewelry (or two, or three, or however many they chose to) using the clasp and the focal you sent. They don't have to be used in the same piece even. They can use the beads you sent, but don't have to, and can use whichever technique they chose and add as many beads and materials from their own stash as they wish.
Images of the finished piece(s) is (are) then posted all at set the "reveal" date of the Blog Hop by the participants.

Sounds fun, doesn't it? When I first came across the BSBP on Stefanie Teufel's Blog Stefanies Sammelsurium I was mesmerized. The idea to send beads to and receive from a complete stranger and then to have to create something with it ... It reminded me a little of a Secret Santa, or a surprise grab bag. And a huge part of the FUN, the appeal of the BSBP really is the element of surprise, and the challenge it provides.

You don't know what you're going to get, it might be something you'd have never in your wildest dreams thought of using. Maybe you are all into delicate stuffs, and you'll receive something big and chunky. Maybe you're all into precious stones and sterling, and – OMG! – your partner sends you resin beads and brass or copper. Maybe you're all into pastels, and your partner sends you beads that are Wham Bam! Bold Colors In Your Face!!

So you get to work with beads and materials you'd likely never have purchased your own, it gets your creative juices flowing, makes you think outside of the box, consider techniques you might otherwise never have tried out. Also, you might have sent your bead soup to your partner with a certain idea in mind, and off they go, creating something completely different and unexpected with it!

The Bead Soup my partner Sara Oehler
sent to me for the 4th BSBP and what I created:

In My Mail Today - Heut Im Briefkasten

JUST a pretty picture today. I've been wanting to play with sari silk ribbon for a while now, so I finally went ahead and ordered one of the color samplers from LaShell's shop designtalentedone on Etsy. Just look at how pretty and vibrant the colors are~! And it is so soft~! ♥

Now what to do with these ...

"Rhinestones" Huh, what?! - Rheinsteine "Häh, Was?!"

SOME of you may be familiar already with my post about "German Silver". Now here's another term I stumbled across quite a while ago which seemed connected to Germany and thus perked my interest:

"Rhinestone"

See, I used to live in Biebrich, a mere 10 minutes walk  I bet most of you US people didn't even know there was a river of that name in Germany. No offense meant, I very much doubt I would be able to name any river within the US. ;D

In any way, I was curious. Why were those sparkly glass stones referred to as "rhine" stones of all things? And why are they referred to as "strass" in most of Europe?!

Turns out, according to www.wikipedia.org, the very, very first "rhinestones" used as diamond imitates were actually indeed rock crystals gathered from the river Rhine. According to http://www.mineralienatlas.de iris quartz/rainbow quartz specifically.

The 18th century Alsatian jeweler Georg Friedrich Strass (1701 - 1773) had the idea to back his "simulated gemstones" made from glass with metal foil which greatly enhanced their brilliance. This foil backing was later replaced with a vapor-deposited mirror coating.
